New Super Luigi U is a bold move for Nintendo. Releasing DLC is definitely not what Nintendo is known for, but as we learned yesterday, New Super Luigi U will also be available as a standalone game disc for players who don’t own the original New Super Mario Bros. U, and thus can’t download the DLC.

Today, we have the latest box art.

New Super Luigi U will cost $29.99 in the retail disc form, and since it doesn’t require a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U to play, it will probably land high on the charts.

Perhaps this is what Nintendo is really looking for. We’ve heard the hints from Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata, that Nintendo is looking at all types of games for the future – including free-to-play, downloadable, and low-priced titles.

Could this $30 dollar downloadable game be the start of Nintendo going out of its comfort zone by tapping into the less reached, but lucrative, mobile gaming market?

Satoru Iwata Unboxes the Wii U Premium Set / Deluxe Bundle with white gloves in the latest presentation from Nintendo-image-http://wiiuturn.com-Wii U Turn

Lots of exciting things are coming soon to the Nintendo Wii U.

Here’s a great compilation of the Wii U part of the Nintendo Direct presentation.

  • Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: The game includes a variety of events from the Winter Games, including curling, skiing, figure skating pairs and snowboard slopestyle – which will make its Olympic debut in Sochi, Russia. Different events might use the Wii Remote Plus controller, Wii U GamePad controller or both. In addition to realistic events, the game also includes those set in the worlds of Sonic and Mario that let players perform moves not possible in real life. Launch details and timing will be announced at a later date.
  • Experience Games from Nintendo’s E3 Booth at Best Buy: Exclusively at participating Best Buy locations in the United States and Canada, consumers will be able to play some of the unreleased Wii U games featured at E3 while the event is occurring in Los Angeles. Details about locations and which games will be featured will be revealed in the coming weeks.
  • New Super Luigi U: The Year of Luigi-themed downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U offers players 82 updated courses. But it also includes a new playable character in multiplayer mode: Nabbit, who steals items from Toad Houses. Nabbit can’t power up, but also won’t take damage when he touches enemies. New Super Luigi U will be released as downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U in the Nintendo eShop on June 20 for $19.99. But in honor of the Year of Luigi, Nintendo is also offering a standalone packaged version of New Super Luigi U that doesn’t require New Super Mario Bros. U on Aug. 25 at a suggested retail price of $29.99.
  • The Wonderful 101: The mass-action adventure from Platinum Games launches Sept. 15. Additional details will be announced after E3.
  • Pikmin 3: New playable characters Alph, Brittany and Charlie recruit the Pikmin creatures to help them gather fruit so that they can return with the seeds to save their home, Planet Koppai. Players can divide activities among the different characters, and explore separate areas in the same map with different groups of Pikmin. Using the GamePad (known as the KopPad in the game), players can view the overall map and grasp what each character and Pikmin are up to. Players also can choose their preferred control option: GamePad in conjunction with the TV, Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk combo or GamePad only in off-TV mode. Players can also use the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk with the GamePad as a second-screen monitor. Pikmin 3 launches Aug. 4.
  • GAME & WARIO: The game launches in stores and in the Nintendo eShop June 23 at a suggested retail price of $39.99, and includes a number of games from WarioWare, Inc., that use the GamePad in different ways. Newly revealed games include: Island, which lets two to five people launch little creatures called Fronks onto islands in the sea to score points; Patchwork, a puzzle game that tests players’ pattern-recognition skills; and Kung-Fu, which challenges players to help Young Cricket navigate a course safely using the forward-looking view on the TV and the top-down view on the GamePad. A new Iwata Asks feature offers more details about the game at http://iwataasks.nintendo.com.
  • Resident Evil Revelations: Capcom’s horror-survival game is launching in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on May 21. The game originally released for Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U version offers players updated HD graphics, GamePad controls and new game content. Players can use the GamePad to view the map and change items using the touch screen without pausing their progress. Or they can play the full game on the GamePad in off-TV mode, or play with the Wii U Pro Controller. The game is Miiverse-compatible, and a demo version is currently available in the Nintendo eShop.

Avalanche Studio’s Just Cause series probably won’t be coming to the Wii U anytime soon.

That’s what we get from the developer, whose Wii U development kits are “collecting dust”.

Christofer Sundberg, Avalanche Studio founder, told PressFire that the studio really isn’t that excited to develop for the Wii U, at all.

“My kids play “Skylanders Giants” on Wii U. It’s pretty much the only dealings I have with the console,” he told PressFire.

“We actually had some developer consoles that just collected dust. It’s a little sad, because we [really] wanted to do something. I think it is a cool platform, but right now it’s not just up to us. We want the game to release as wide as possible.”

just cause wii u?

Basically, Avalanche Studio doesn’t want to develop for the Nintendo Wii U because not enough people are playing games with Wii U consoles.

PressFire: Is it that there are too few Wii U owners?

Sundberg: Yes.

However, Sundberg also added that Nintendo isn’t currently doing a good job reaching out to third party developers. Instead of being easily accessible to developers, he said Nintendo was closed off to Avalanche Studios. Apparently, the Just Cause devs have had trouble working with Nintendo in the past.

Contrasting Nintendo to Sony, he argued that Nintendo should “stretch out a hand” to third party devs, and include them more.

“Nintendo has from our point of view always been difficult [...] You never quite know where to turn. Now, however, we have managed to get through, via the publisher we work with.”

“I think Nintendo has much to gain by going the same way as Sony, by stretching out a hand to the developers so as to include them more.”

Sundberg noted that, if things would have been different, the team at Avalanche Studios would have felt more excited about developing for the Wii U.

“[If we had felt more enthusiasm,] perhaps [we might have] wanted to make something cool and good. In Nintendo’s case, it could have been the use of GamePad controller for the Wii U.”

While Sundberg’s comments might seem contradictory to the opinions of other third party developers, remember that Avalanche Studios isn’t the first studio to doubt the Wii U. Former Wii U exclusive Rayman Legends was delayed so it could be ported to the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Still, you have to wonder if Avalanche is making the right choice.

We have not made any DLC announcements for Wii U.

Comments like that are disappointing to Wii U owners, especially when it’s not the first time DLC game content has skipped Nintendo’s home console.

The people behind the fighting game Injustice announced yesterday that new characters would join the DC Comics line-up via DLC coming in the near future. However, no confirmation of DLC for the Wii U stirred things up, big time.

Was it possible that this was another case of the Wii U getting skipped over?

Thankfully, the Injustice developers clarified today via Twitter that the Wii U will get the Injustice DLC, just later. This summer, to be more precise, the Injustice DLC should be available to Wii U owners.

We expect DLC for the Wii U version of Injustice: Gods Among Us to be available this summer. Stay tuned for more details.

Even though it will be late, are you glad to see the Injustice DLC coming to the Wii U?

Analyst Michael Pachter let loose with his latest opinions on the gaming world in his latest GameTrailers Pach-Attack segment.

Talking about Nintendo’s decision to skip their E3 presentation, Pachter shared his view of Nintendo’s controversial announcement.

In case you don’t know, Nintendo announced not long ago that is would purposely miss its usual spot in the E3 presentation. While Nintendo will still be present at E3, the business choice raised a lot of speculation about why a major gaming company would skip their highlight slot in the E3 presentation for the first time in years.

Michael Pachter’s gained quite a name for himself as being the Nintendo naysayer. For the most part, he disagrees with Nintendo’s business moves and console innovations.

But for some odd reason, Pachter agreed with Nintendo’s business decision this time, saying that he feels Nintendo made the right decision overall . However, he adds that the Wii U-manufacturing company will miss out on major publicity.

“I think it is a crappy decision because you don’t get many opportunities when you’re a console manufacturer to have the entire world focused on games. So it’s the one time a year that you can be certain that everybody cares.”

“But you asked was it a good business decision and, from your basic economics, it’s a profit deal. If you’re expected revenues from spending money are bigger than the amount you have to spend to generate those revenues, then it’s a good business decision.”

“I think that Nintendo gave this a lot of thought – they said we don’t really have anything new to show, [...] we don’t really have any new Wii U games that are going to shine that are playable and, oh by the way, the reason that Fox News, ABC, etc, are all here is to look at the next Xbox and PS4, then we’re just going to look bad next to them.”

“I think not doing it, probably, is a good business decision. I just think, as a gamer, and as someone who is interested in the industry, I would prefer to see everybody represented at every show. Nintendo made a business decision, and ultimately, it is probably the right one.”

The 3D Mario game, as we’ve known for some time, is one of the games that Nintendo is working on, but we have yet to hear of a release date or verified title.

CVG reports that Nintendo plans to release this 3D Mario game by October.

Apparently, a source close to the executive circle spilled the information to CVG, also noting that the second half of 2013 is Nintendo’s chance to revitalize Wii U sales.

The Wii U has suffered from disappointing sales in the past few months, and according to this source, Nintendo didn’t feel comfortable marketing the Wii U until after the major spring update, which drastically increased the system performance.

Along with the spring update, Nintendo seems to be holding back some major titles until the second half of 2013, leading into the holiday season. While it’s hard to confirm any of Nintendo’s plans yet, this would seem to be the case, as the source also divulged that Nintendo would soon be launching a large marketing campaign for the Wii U.

Do you think the source’s information is true?

Official Nintendo Magazine has received word from an unnamed “retail source” that Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released for the Wii U.

It’s been unclear since Activision’s announcement whether or not the next game in the hit first-person shooter series would be on the Wii U.

Activision clarified their previous statement earlier today, but still didn’t confirm anything for the Wii U.

Interestingly, the retail source told ONM that the game would come to the Wii U, along with the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and the next Xbox. The retail source did not confirm that the game would be released for the upcoming Playstation 4 console, interestingly enough.

The game’s set release date is November 5, and we should see more information in May during the Nextbox console reveal.

“We will not be releasing a Wii U version of Madden NFL in 2013. However, we have a strong partnership with Nintendo and will continue to evaluate opportunities for delivering additional Madden NFL products for Nintendo fans in the future.”

If you’ve kept up, you know that the “strong partnership” statement is a joke. Nintendo and EA’s relationship, especially recently, has been fragile, to be positive. Major title Crysis 3 skipped the Wii U mainly because of the EA-Nintendo relationship. Even though the title was already up and working on the Wii U console, Crytek decided not to risk a release with the current status.

Unfortunately, it looks like Madden 25 is yet another victim to the bad standings between EA and Nintendo.

Speaking to the crowd  of investors at Nintendo’s financial briefing, Satoru Iwata admitted that the delay of many “launch-window” titles was caused by an unexpected need for launch title development resources.

satoru iwata, nintendo

The vague “launch-window” finally settled on sometime before March 2013. For some titles, such as Pikmin 3, the original planned release date during the launch window continually changed as Nintendo moved the release dates back farther into the 2013 year. We still don’t have Pikmin 3, and the date’s already way past what anyone could reasonably consider a “launch-window”.

What Iwata’s telling us now is that Nintendo had to move some developers away from the games they were working on (like Pikmin 3) in order to prepare the Nintendo games that launched alongside the Wii U.

‘The reason for the delayed release of our first-party titles was the fact that completing the games released at the same time as the launch of Wii U required more development resources than previously expected, so some staff members from development teams working on other titles had to help complete them.”

Also citing gamer satisfaction as an issue, Iwata told investors that gamers continually want better and “more polished” titles, and it takes more time to add those final touches.

No matter what excuses or reasons Nintendo has for the delays, the Wii U could really use a boost in sales from new software. Sales in the last few months have been disappointing.

call of duty ghosts

After Activision’s announcement of the new Call of Duty: Ghosts, we all had to wonder about whether the Wii U will get it’s version of the next title in a hit series.

The cryptic announcement originally said:

“Call of Duty: Ghosts will release on Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC on November 5. Call of Duty: Ghosts will also be available for next generation platforms.”

Today, after many Nintendo fan questions, Activision has released a clarifying statement, which, unfortunately, still doesn’t confirm anything.

“We don’t have any news for the Wii U at this time, as we aren’t dating next generation platforms yet. Stay tuned.”

At least this does answer one question: Activision does consider the Wii U as a next-gen console. That’s a good sign. Activision is basically placing the Wii U with the next Xbox, and the Playstation 4 when it classifies consoles.

Perhaps we’ll get confirmation of a Wii U version when more information is revealed about the Nextbox in May.

The next title in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts, is coming November 5, and the Nintendo Wii U could really use a popular game release to boost slouching sales.
