A member of the popular gaming forum NeoGAF is claiming to have received an interesting email about the Wii U Basic Set’s future. The NeoGAF member claims this email was sent “company-wide”, stating that all Wii U Basic Sets are being “recalled”.
Interestingly, if this rumor is true, Nintendo is not only discontinuing the Wii U Basic version, but going as far to recall the systems so that the sets can be repackaged or bundled.
When the Wii U launched, Nintendo originally went with two versions of the same console, the Wii U Deluxe Set, and the Wii U Basic Set. It was clear from the start that the Deluxe Set was much more popular with consumers. For only $50 more, customers could get the black-colored Wii U Deluxe Set, which featured a copy of the game Nintendo Land and 32 GB of memory, 24 GB more than the white-colored basic counterpart.
This rumor has some merit when you consider the popularity of the Deluxe Set over the Basic Set, but until we know more, stay cautious. We don’t have confirmation from Nintendo, so this could be an independent decision “company” the NeoGAF member mentioned, or possibly a blatant-lie rumor.
Is Nintendo going to end the Wii U Basic? What do you think?
UPDATE: Game Stop is now confirming this rumor. Nintendo has declined to comment, so no official word yet. We still don’t know whether this is all Wii U Basics or just a Game Stop decision.
